What is the menu today in a subantarctic kelp food web from the Kerguelen Islands? Phytodetritus, phytoplankton and phytobenthos; not living kelp

چکیده
Kelp forests dominated by Macrocystis pyrifera are widely distributed in coastal waters from boreal, temperate and subantarctic regions. This widespread distribution may result regional differences food web structure functioning. In northern regions, where most studies on kelp forest benthic webs have been conducted, grazing is a well-documented phenomenon can lead to the overgrazing of M. sea urchins when their predators (e.g., otters) absent. contrast, little known about counterparts areas. The present study aimed reconstruct environment using stable isotope analysis. Stable carbon (δ13C), nitrogen (δ15N) sulfur (δ34S) ratios were measured sources (macrophytobenthos, suspended particulate organic matter SPOM, sediment) consumers (sponges, bivalves, gastropods, sedentary mobile polychaetes, arthropods echinoderms) which sampled Kerguelen archipelago. Mixing models highlighted two interconnected trophic pathways either supported SPOM resuspended macrophytobenthos detritus (bentho-pelagic), or live micro/macrophytobenthos (phytobenthos-based). No major prey for several consumers, indicating existence potential supplementary pathways. consumer relying primarily living was mixing models. investigated hence complex ecosystem supporting multiple pathways, direct consumption limited. Nonetheless, other species constitute pool

Kelp surprise
Coral reefs are considered one of the most important tropical marine habitats. They are hotspots of biodiversity and productivity, so their vulnerability to environmental change has prompted efforts around the world to help manage and conserve threatened reefs. But, according to new work, another tropical environment also provides crucial support to organisms and has been somewhat overlooked be...
متن کاملKelp genes reveal effects of subantarctic sea ice during the Last Glacial Maximum.
The end of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) dramatically reshaped temperate ecosystems, with many species moving poleward as temperatures rose and ice receded. Whereas reinvading terrestrial taxa tracked melting glaciers, marine biota recolonized ocean habitats freed by retreating sea ice. The extent of sea ice in the Southern Hemisphere during the LGM has, however, yet to be fully resolved, with...
متن کاملP-value: What is and what is not
The misinterpretation and misuse of p-value have been increasing for decades. In March 2016, the American Statistical Association released a statement to warn about the use and interpretation of p-value. In this study, we provided a definition and discussion of p-value and emphasized the importance of its accurate interpretation.
متن کاملEvolutionary consequences of food chain length in kelp forest communities.
Kelp forests are strongly influenced by macroinvertebrate grazing on fleshy macroalgae. In the North Pacific Ocean, sea otter predation on macroinvertebrates substantially reduces the intensity of herbivory on macroalgae. Temperate Australasia, in contrast, has no known predator of comparable influence. These ecological and biogeographic patterns led us to predict that (i) the intensity of herb...

1 Abstract We describe a set of abstractions for managing elaborate irregular data structures that communicate within Cartesian subspaces. These abstractions have been implemented as part of KeLPTools, a joint eeort involving research groups at UCSD and LBNL. We discuss the application of KeLPTools to a challenging problem involving structured adaptive mesh reenement, and discuss progress to da...
